Book Report

Friendship, the same as love, is also endless!

Last two weeks, I read a fiction that is named A Boy No More. It was written by Harry Mazer who is an author of A Boy At War. Basically, I realized that it was published by Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division at 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10020 at Aug, 2004. Due to my English is not good, I think it’s easier for me to understand than any other fictions. That is why I choose it at first. Furthermore, I’m very interested in the history of World War II. After finishing reading this fiction, I found it was very serious that it reflected the real society at World War II.

The setting of this fiction was in a real life. It was located in Bakersfield, California. This story took place in 1940’s when the World War II broke out. Bakersfield, where is located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, is a beautiful and convenient city close to the Pacific Ocean. I guess the author may pick up this setting in order to tell us how the main character, as well as his mother and younger sister, escaped from Hawaii to California.

The main character in this book is a young boy whose name is Adam Pelko. He is a fifteen year-old American boy. He is very wise and full of brave. Adam Pelko is very kind-hearted for his friends when his friend, Davi Mori, asked Adam to help him find his father, although it means disobeying his mother and doing something his father would not have liked. On the contrary, he is too young to become reckless and make a mistake easily.

This fiction narrated that after witnessing the USS Arizona sink with his father, Adam escaped from Hawaii to California with his mother and younger sister. Then his best friend had a trouble and asked him to help. Therefore, it’s his goal that he tried his best to help find his father. Owing to his friend is a Japanese American, in other word; his friend is also an American citizen. However, when he was the first time to new school, his classmates didn’t trust him that he was from Pearl Harbor, everyone think that he told a lie and looked down upon him. When his classmates laughed at the Japanese once, it impelled him to make a decision quickly to help his Japanese American friend.

The message of this fiction is that the friendship is invaluable. Even though he faced many difficulties and danger, he always put the friendship at the first place. When he went to Fresno to look for his friend’s aunt, but she had already moved her home several times, he never gave up, he found one by one and he succeeded at last. Through this book, the author wanted us to know that love is endless and friendship is endless too.

In my personal opinion, it held my interest very much that it makes me understand the importance of friendship and relationship. The writing style of the author is my cup of tea. Because of the story what the author wrote wonderfully made me touched. What’s more, I would introduce this book to my friends who attaches importance to friendship and relationship.
